Burson V7 Vivid Op Amp Review by Late Night Unboxing: Can You Hear a Difference?

Published on

Post Info

Colin from Late Night Unboxing tried Burson V7 Vivid op amps in his Fosi Audio ZD3 and recorded a sound demo so viewers can hear the difference for themselves.

Note: the V7 Vivid reviewed here is the op amp now sold as the V7 Vivid Pro.

Why Discrete Op Amps

He explains that discrete op amps like the Burson can use components with tighter tolerances, such as better matched resistors, and have a simpler signal path dedicated to audio, so in theory they should sound cleaner and more transparent than IC op amps.

Installation

The video walks through replacing the three op amps in the ZD3, including aligning the notch on the Burson with the DIP8 socket. For the demo he recorded the ZD3’s balanced output directly to a Zoom F3 recorder.

What He Heard

  • More clarity in the upper mids and treble, making it easier to hear details
  • Crisper treble, with guitar string decay sounding more linear
  • Improved imaging
  • Greater soundstage depth on jazz and classical, with a more precise and wider soundstage

He could not reliably hear a difference in the bass.

Verdict

He says the V7 Vivid “does add a bit of clarity and improve the Sound Stage”. As only one part of the device is changing, he calls the improvement relatively minor, but if you want to get a little more out of your DAC or amp, he suggests giving them a try.
