Burson Funk Review by Jay’s iyagi: A Desktop Speaker Amp Jackpot

Post Info

Jay Lee of Jay’s iyagi reviewed the Burson Funk, Burson’s first speaker amplifier, on YouTube.

Driving the KEF LS50 Meta

Jay says the Funk can drive his KEF LS50 Meta speakers on his desktop, “and that’s very rare”. He believes Burson’s high-current claims: “don’t be deceived by a size”. With a subwoofer added, he calls it perhaps one of his favourite desktop setups of all time.

Imaging and Bass

Of the many amplifiers he has used with this setup, he says the Burson is “by far the best” for imaging. He found plenty of bass authority: “it dips down low, it’s able to control it, it punches hard”.

Headphone Amp and Op Amps

The Class A headphone amp can drive most headphones, with a sound signature very similar to the Burson Soloist. He mainly used the Vivid V6 op amps, which he found smooth and refined on top, and also tried the Classic, which he found a little edgier and clearer. With the upgraded op amps the treble is smooth and detailed, not rolled off, with a large soundstage, pinpoint imaging and “that analog sound that i love so much”.

Design and Features

  • An all-metal chassis that doubles as a heat sink
  • A headset microphone input for gaming and calls
  • Front buttons for gain and for switching between the speaker and headphone amps
  • The Cool Stand saves desk space

He would have liked an XLR input and pre-amp outputs.

Verdict

He also tried the Funk with Totem speakers in a stereo setup and was “just blown away”. His verdict: “it earns my recommendation especially for desktop scenarios it is one of the best amplifiers out there currently”.
