Please note: this video reviews the Burson Soloist 3X GT (2023 version), the predecessor of the Soloist GT4. It is not a review of the Soloist GT4.

In “SHOOTOUT! Silver Fox vs AMP-23R vs Soloist 3X GT”, Lachlan Fennen of Passion for Sound follows up his review of the $4,000 Silver Fox headphone amplifier. He compares it with the Enleum AMP-23R and with the Burson Soloist 3X GT, which he often uses as a reference.

The Soloist 3X GT Used in the Test

Lachlan used the 2023 Soloist 3X GT with upgraded Silent Power modules. He describes it as about a $3,000 amplifier as tested, compared with about $4,000 for the Silver Fox. He used a Chord TT2 with M Scaler as the DAC, and the Meze Elite as his main headphone for this comparison.

Soloist 3X GT vs Silver Fox: Clarity, Separation and Punch

With the Silver Fox in its normal mode, he heard wonderful clarity, separation and definition, with a smooth sound. Moving to the Soloist 3X GT, which costs about $1,000 less, gave him more clarity, more separation and a tighter, punchier sound. He said it was quite shocking to him that, in his opinion, the Burson was still clearly stronger than the Silver Fox. He also noted that the Soloist is much smaller.

Where the Silver Fox Has the Edge

  • The Silver Fox has more power and more headphone connections on the front.
  • Lachlan prefers its simple three-button interface to the Burson’s menu system.
  • Its smooth, refined sound may suit some headphones better, such as the ZMF Caldera.

Verdict

Lachlan says the Silver Fox is a lovely amp. In a pure technical head-to-head, though, he kept going back to the Soloist GT and the Enleum AMP-23R.
