Jürgen Kraus of audioreviews.org reviewed the Burson V7 Vivid Dual op amp, calling it a “Rocket From Oz”. He listened mainly through a Burson Funk, comparing it with the V6 Vivid, with Sennheiser HD620S and HD 600 headphones.
Note: the V7 Vivid reviewed here is the op amp now sold as the V7 Vivid Pro.
Speeding Up the Amp
His summary: the V7 Vivid improves on the V6 Vivid’s technicalities, “speeding up the amp”, with a leaner, crisper, more spacious and more transparent presentation. The trade-off he notes is a little less of the V6’s organic realism.
Sound Compared With the V6 Vivid
- Bass: crisper, drier and more composed
- Midrange: improved resolution, openness and clarity, with vocals gaining an “extra sheen”
- Better extension at both ends
- Better 3D rendering and stage organisation, with a wider stage and more headroom
Design and Fit
He points out that the V7 is shorter than the V6, so it fits more devices, and praises the improved heatsink, the attractive design and the reverse voltage protection.
Pros and Cons
- Pro: sonic improvement over the V6 Vivid
- Pro: shorter than the V6 for a better fit
- Pro: improved heatsink and attractive design
- Con: less organic than the V6 Vivid
- Con: can sound sharp with some amps
Verdict
Technically, he calls it “definitely a substantial upgrade over the already very good V6 Vivid”. His advice: the choice depends on your amplifier, which has to “harmonize” with the V7 Vivid.
