Watch: Passion for Sound reviews the Mothership

Build and versatility

He describes “a lovely full aluminum stand” with a big flat base panel that keeps it stable. The cutouts help airflow under and over each device, and being metal the shelves act “somewhat as heat sinks”. It is not just for Burson gear: his racks also hold a streamer, a tube amp and other DACs and amps.

What he loves

  • Several devices take up the desk space of one, “vastly better than having everything laid out in a row” or stacking them on top of each other
  • “I do really love the mothership”
  • Deep shelves that fit most devices, very stable and able to take a lot of weight
  • A little give in the shelves helps isolate devices from desk vibration

A fair note on cable management

He found the rear cable channel and its sliding panel tricky in a complex system. The holes don’t always line up with a device’s connectors, and many thick cables can clog the channel. His tip: allow extra cable length, and use the channel only for cables that run to the floor. With a fairly simple system “you’re probably going to be okay”. Very large components may not fit the bottom plate, so check the measurements first.

Verdict

“All in all I think the mothership is a wonderful accessory.” For those without room to go horizontal, “this is a brilliant way to go vertical… I highly recommend them they’re a beautiful system.”
