Tharbamar has shared his long-term experience with the Burson Conductor Voyager Deluxe in a video review on YouTube, using it as a DAC, preamplifier and headphone amplifier in his office and main system. He rates it 8/10, listing good power, quality build and transparent sound as its pros.

Build and features

He calls the build quality “very nice and well built”, with a unique-looking remote control. The menu system “is very simple”, with push buttons for input, output and settings, and the Conductor Voyager can also be set up vertically. His only small complaint about the build is the rubber bumps used as feet.

  • Fully balanced, dual mono Class A headphone and preamplifier stages
  • Burson V7 Vivid custom op amps
  • ESS 9039 Pro DAC chip
  • Subwoofer output that works with headphones or the preamp output

A very transparent preamplifier

Driving a tube power amplifier, the preamp stage sounded “revealing transparent high in resolution”. In his words, the “pre-stage is totally neutral”, probably “one of the most transparent sounding”.

DAC performance: deep, rich bass

As a DAC, the bass delivery was his favourite quality: “Deep and rich attack, nice layering and texture and articulation. Separation is very good.” He describes the overall sound as “a bit of warmer side of neutral”, with the soundstage focused between and around the speakers, like “a studio quality kind of precision”.

Headphones, with a subwoofer

He found the “headphone stage class A amplification is transparent”, with “totally silent operation” and background noise control that “is excellent”. A highlight was adding his subwoofer to the headphone output: “it sounded incredibly good”, and the “sound stage got bigger and deeper”.

He notes a pop sound when the unit powers off, and that very low impedance planars such as his 8 ohm Verum 1 need more current, adding that “not all headphone stages can drive Verum 1 authoritatively”.

Conclusion

His biggest highlights: a “very transparent sounding preamplifier stage, engaging DAC output stage, neutral and quiet headphone stage”, with the option to add a subwoofer. “This is a component that can take out a lot of components in your system… that is a great offering from Burson Audio.”
