Gaming Audio Lab reviewed the Playmate 2 back in 2022 and called it the best in gaming audio. In this video review the channel asks whether the Burson Playmate 3 can improve on it.
Design Refinements
The controls sit in the same places as on the Playmate 2. The power button, volume knob and menu button now have a more premium brownish finish, the display has been upgraded to a smooth blue readout, and the casing has a darker gunmetal finish.
Stock Op Amps vs V7 Vivid
Measured with an audio analyser, most differences between the stock op amps and Burson V7 Vivid op amps were within the margin of error. Stereo crosstalk was the exception: the V7s gave much better channel separation and a wider stereo image. The reviewer says the V7 is “absolutely worth it” if precise imaging matters to you, while the stock op amps still give an excellent experience and can be upgraded later.
Playmate 3 vs Playmate 2
With the same V6 op amps, the Playmate 3 was a refinement rather than a revolution, with lower total harmonic distortion as the biggest win.
Gaming Tests
- Cyberpunk 2077: background music and ambient detail were incredibly well defined
- Incursion Red River: positioning was harder to pinpoint, which he puts down to the game engine
- Company of Heroes 3: in busy battles the Playmate 3 kept individual shots distinct
Music Listening
With V7 op amps, he found a wide, detailed soundstage with instruments well separated even in dense mixes, and a vibrant, engaging sound that suits electronic and orchestral music.
Verdict
For first-time Playmate buyers, the reviewer says “you’re in for a real treat”. Playmate 2 owners may only see an incremental improvement. He concludes that the Playmate 3 “remains the best gaming digital to analog converter on the market today”.
