cheapaudioman reviewed the Burson Funk on YouTube, comparing its speaker amp section with a Class D desktop amplifier.
Two Separate Amplifiers Under One Roof
He explains that the Funk is a separate speaker amplifier and a separate Class A headphone amplifier sharing one enclosure. It drove his Acoustic Energy AE100 Mk II and Wharfedale Denton 80th Anniversary speakers just fine.
Imaging and Depth
In blind A/B switching, he found the tonal balance very close to the Class D amp, but the Burson was “way deeper” in soundstage because “it’s very good at Imaging”. He says it “really separated itself” in imaging and layering, putting things definitively in space and making them more three-dimensional.
Headphone Amplifier
He calls the headphone section “extremely clean, not really colored one way or the other”, with a “Goldilocks” soundstage that is neither the widest nor the narrowest.
Build Quality
He likes the upgradeable op amps, the build quality and the speaker binding posts. Of the volume knob he says “I don’t think I’ve seen a volume knob this good” on a modern piece of equipment. He would have liked a pre-amp output for a subwoofer.
Verdict
He says he hasn’t “heard anything imaged this well outside of some pretty high-end stuff”. If you want one good-looking, well-built box for a small space, he thinks the Funk is “a great choice” with room to upgrade, and has “no problem recommending” it.
