Passion for Sound reviewed the Burson Super Charger 3A just before its launch in July 2021, in his video review “Burson Audio Super Charger 3A – High frequency power delivery”. In the video he calls it by its pre-launch name, the MCPS 007. He tested a pair of them on the Burson Composer DAC and Soloist headphone amplifier.
Watch: Passion for Sound reviews the Super Charger 3A
How it sounds
He heard the same benefit on the DAC and on the amp: “the benefits received are noticeable and they are the same regardless of whether it’s on the dac or the headphone amp”.
- “The overall sound became smoother but not less detailed”
- “It’s taking away a little bit of glare that i didn’t even realize was there until i plugged in the power supply”
- “There was a blacker of background which meant that everything was better defined within the sound stage”
- The sound stage sounded “just a tiny bit more spacious”, and tonal characteristics of instruments came through a bit better
On a slightly edgy recording he heard the treble become “smoother and more refined” with the Super Charger, without being rolled off or softened.
An honest note
He stresses that the changes are subtle. If you are still deciding between better headphones and a power supply, he would buy the headphones first. The Super Charger is for a system that is already nicely set up: “it’s definitely that final two or three percent improvement”. He leaves the value question to each listener, as it depends on your system and preferences.
Verdict
“It’s a subtle improvement but a great improvement it’s one of those things that once you plug these in with the composer conductor soloist etc once you plug those in you’re not going to want to go back to the old inline power supply”. In his words, “it’s an upgrade worth considering if you’ve got [Burson] products”.
